"Ask yourself what you need at this point and go for it," advises Karla Misjan, who runs a digital mommy circle called The Class Digital Studio. Mom's Circle" at The Class Digital Studio. She's also a strong advocate for meeting the needs of moms. But it also puts the onus on moms to know what they need, and sometimes that can be another responsibility.
Jenna Hermans, a mother of four, author of Chaos to Calm, and COO and co-founder of Be Courageous, a business-minded consulting firm, receives a lot of Mother's Day gifts. One of her favorite celebrations so far was when her kids created a home spa for her.
"They offer massages, shampoos and pedicures. I even got a deli tray to chew on during the pedicure service," Hermans said. "The customer service is top-notch!" Just make sure cleanup afterward is part of the service.

Mother's Day can easily become about our children. Pranidhi Varshney, a mother of two and owner of Yoga Shala West in Los Angeles, decided to give herself the best Mother's Day gift idea yet - a weekend with friends at a California retreat center.
"It was the first time I'd ever left my youngest child overnight, and honestly, it was awesome," Varshney says. "I needed time to recharge - not being responsible for anyone's meals, all of which were prepared for me, soaking in the tub overlooking the ocean, reading. I honored myself because I chose to do something for myself that weekend."

Varshney understands that it's a financial privilege to be able to attend a retreat, so she also suggests that her partner take the kids somewhere to spend the whole day. "When do moms get to relax in their own house? Even something as simple as being able to take a nap is a gift," Varshney said.
Destini Ann Davis is a single mom of two school-age girls and the author of Very Intentional Parenting. Just One Day. She also prefers to celebrate Mother's Day alone.
"I usually choose a child-free Mother's Day if I can. I don't get a lot of support, but I rely on community on this day," she says. "So most of the highlights of Mother's Day in the past have been solo dates and silence!"
Yoga therapist and teacher Ivorie Jenkins is currently "getting through it" (as we moms like to say) with a six- and two-year-old. She jokes, "If you're a mom of kids like I am, all you want is time away from your roommate."
She suggests you book a hotel room for her the Saturday before Mother's Day and drop her off, leaving her alone. "Let her shower and eat in peace. Let her take a nap, wake up, and go back to sleep," Jenkins says. "Then on Sunday, pick her up with a bouquet of her favorite flowers and take her outside for brunch or a homemade picnic lunch. Mom will feel refreshed."

"One of the reasons modern moms feel so stressed is the isolation that comes with a lack of community," Varshney says. She explains that some moms prefer to connect with others instead of avoiding connection with themselves.
"How about organizing a get-together with a few close family friends?" Varshney said. "That way the kids can run around with each other and the adults can have some time to connect. If someone other than mom comes and organizes it, that's a plus."
Jaime McFaden is a single mom of two, a self-care expert, and the author of the best-selling book, The Self-Care Wave: Lift the Whole Village. She loves inspiring others to achieve self-care through community. Some of her most memorable experiences have been hosting walks, barbecues, and other mom-centered events where the whole family is welcome. She suggests taking a mini photo of mom, kids, and partner because, as McFadden explains, "It's usually the moms who take the pictures."
"My favorite part of Mother's Day is definitely when we take a walk with the dog to a local waterfall and the whole family climbs up the rocks and ventures out by the waterfall," says Susanna Barkataki, speaker, author, and yoga culture advocate. "I love going to a nursery and buying a plant or flower so we can grow them from seed and nurture them together. Or take a walk in nature and share interesting things we notice," Barkataki said.
Hermans is also passionate about drawing inspiration from the outdoors. "One year, my kids made bouquets from flowers they collected from their yards and neighbors. Another time, the older kids watched the younger kids for a couple of hours so my husband and I could do something together - we went hiking. It was a treat."

"Honestly, the best gift is always having everyone together!" Yoga and Pilates instructor Kristen McGee says.
She encourages families to ditch the screens and engage in group activities like puzzles and board games, or get outside and be together. Her favorite ways to celebrate include making great connections with her three sons, including "making breakfast together, doing some yoga poses, taking a walk on the beach, and snuggling up on the couch to watch a movie."

One of the most memorable Mother's Day gift ideas Mary Valata has experienced was when her kindergarten-aged daughter gave her "the cutest piece of art." "There's nothing better than a gift made with love by my child," says the working mom's holistic health coach and Tasty Directives marketing director.
It's not an uncommon sentiment. "I love handmade gifts! I'll gladly accept tissue paper flowers." Audrey Rey Espinosa, owner of Yoga Sanctum in Los Angeles, laughs.
Her Mother's Day tradition is to remind the strong moms in her life that they are appreciated and supported. She usually chooses to make a phone call or some sort of act of service. If a mother has lost a loved one and has no children on earth, you may still want to send her flowers or a card.
Of course, our most influential images of mothers are not always those who gave birth to us. Bakataki reminds us that there are many ways to care and encourages us to "focus on roles and connections, not titles."
